White Paper Co. ‘Gives Back’ Through Community Activism Program

December 16^th, 2008, Delta, British Columbia – White Paper Co. is building their next group of leaders by encouraging their employees to get involved in their communities and to give back in the areas that they work and live in. White Paper Co. has partnered with the St. James Society who’s mission is to provide innovative housing, life skills and care programs for: Women and children at risk; Homeless at risk, Terminally Ill and Mentally Ill. The St. James Society has been providing beds, financial education, job placement and a “safe” place to live since 1961. White Paper Co. provides all their employees with three days off from their regular duties to volunteer at St. James Society with full pay for their time.

“The lessons from this program go beyond what can be learned at our offices. Our employees get the chance to learn and help support people who are unable to support themselves. Some of our employees have never even been exposed to these realities. We want to enlighten them in the hope they will continue taking the initiative of getting involved in the community.” said Michael Shein, Co-Founder and CEO of White Paper Co. Employees continuing community involvement is a long term ambition for the White Paper Co. owners.

Another reason White Paper Co. partnered with the St. James Society was to help build a more supportive culture in the office. “If we can encourage our employees to help out in our local community and can help them see how much impact they can make on people in need, it will help us foster this supportive attitude in the office.” said Reg Fitzgerald, Co-Founder and Vice President, Corporate Development of White Paper Co. “We have a moral obligation to give back to our community as it has given so much to us. Our employees share in our values and have enthusiastically embraced the chance to help those less fortunate.” The White Paper Co. owners are optimistic that once their employees complete the three days of volunteering they will continue their support in the community with the St. James Society or other non-for-profit organizations.

The St. James Society’s goal is to help the estimated 25,000 people living in Vancouver with a mental health disorder and with a substance use disorder, the estimated 5,120 people of the Downtown Eastside who are either ‘unwell’ or ‘in crisis’ and the estimated 2,592 number of homeless in Metro Vancouver. White Paper Co. employees have been assisting in many areas to help achieve this goal including; Accounting, Budgeting, Marketing and painting. They have matched their employee’s skills (or requests) with St. James Society needs.

White Paper Co. has made it their goal to give back to the community. In addition to the St. James Society, White Paper Co. has also donated their time and efforts to other causes such as Lions Society, Food Bank, Red Cross, United Way, the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation, and the JDRF Walk to Find a Cure throughout the years.
